Name/Korean name: Molly Battaglini/Jeong, Hye Ok (she/her)

First KAtCH event: My first official event was Chuseok 2023, but I found out about KAtCH from stopping by the booth at the Taste of Korea event in the Hmart parking lot in August 2021.

Where did you grow up/Where do you live now? I grew up in Mt. Morris, IL (small town of 3,000) and currently live in Mundelein, IL.

Tell us about yourself: I arrived in the U.S. when I was 3.5 months old and grew up as an only child. My hometown is very small; the only other Korean I knew in school was also an adoptee. College broadened my world a bit—first at Northern Illinois University, then Illinois State University. In 2020, I began a journey of self-discovery, exploring my identity and adoption story. I continue to learn, grow, and heal but with the added support of the adoptee community (which is amazing and includes my chosen family) and increased understanding from my family and friends. Today, as a middle school psychologist, I’m passionate about creating safe spaces where students feel seen and supported, both emotionally and academically. I’m introverted and reserved but can be silly and funny (at least I think so) when comfortable. I also have a dark sense of humor.

You’ll likely KAtCH me doing the following: Relaxing at home with my family (husband, two kids, and dog), watching horror movies or k-dramas, trying new breweries, listening to punk rock or k-pop, going on walks, or finding ways to increase my efficiency and effectiveness at work. These days, I am also planning my first trip back to Korea!

Why do you enjoy being involved with the KAtCH community? I appreciate being part of the KAtCH community because it allows me to connect with other KADs and engage in meaningful events KAtCH organizes. Although I may not attend every event, I always find joy in those I can participate in. KAtCH and other adoptee communities provide a safe space where I feel I’m “enough” and understood and all the complexities of my identity are seen. This genuine sense of belonging fosters a supportive environment that is enriching and, I think, essential to survive and thrive as an adoptee.

Favorite restaurant(s) in Chicagoland: Blue House in Mundelein is a go-to for Korean food
