Name/Korean name
Michael Park (Shin Seok-su, 신석수), He/Him
First KAtCH event:
My first KAtCH event was a happy hour led by Chris. It was mostly uncomfortable for me at first, as it was a completely new experience, but it ultimately felt comforting to be around other Korean adoptees.
Where did you grow up/Where do you live now?
I grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and lived there until I was 18. After attending college in Iowa, I worked in biotech sales on the West Coast before returning to Minnesota for medical school. Now I live in Logan Square, Chicago, and I’m in my first year of medical residency.
Tell us about yourself:
I’ve always been a curious and driven person. As a child, I dreamed of becoming a pilot, but over time, I became more attracted to medicine. A pivotal moment for me happened on a flight to Southeast Asia on a Korean Airlines plane. There was a medical emergency, and the flight attendants asked if there were any doctors on board. In that moment, I knew I wanted to be the person who could step up in a crisis and have the skills to help. That experience solidified my decision to pursue medicine.
I started medical school thinking I wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon, but I realized the lifestyle wasn’t the right fit for me. I pivoted to dermatology, which is still very procedural, provides strong compensation, and gives me time for the hobbies I love. Fitness has been a huge part of my life—I started during college, and it quickly became my favorite part of the day. I’m also a classically trained vocalist and grew up singing in choral ensembles and a cappella groups. I still sing at events when asked and hope to dive back into it more in the future.
I see myself as a self-starter with strong discipline, always striving to grow and achieve my goals. I’m also learning to balance that drive with being present and enjoying life to the fullest.
You’ll likely KAtCH me doing the following
You’ll likely find me at the hospital during busy blocks, lifting at the gym with Chris, or enjoying a protein-packed meal at Panda Express. I also love HYROX-style training, hanging out with friends, making music, watching Netflix, or following Korean influencers and fitness athletes like Yun Sung Bin.
Why do you enjoy being involved with the KAtCH community?
Being part of the KAtCH community is incredibly meaningful to me. I’ve met so many amazing people and some of my best friends in Chicago through this group. It brings me immense joy and happiness to be around these wonderful people. I hope to contribute to the Korean adoptee group by showcasing a broad representation of Korean male masculinity, challenging stereotypes, and encouraging others to express a full range of emotions. I aim to inspire others to embrace their confidence, beauty, and authenticity.
Favorite restaurant(s) in Chicagoland:
My favorite restaurants in Chicago include House of Hwa Sun for jjamppong and jjajangmyeon and New Village Pub in Glenview for the best Korean food. For cocktails, I love The Whale in Logan Square and Easy Does It.
